As citizens of Nigeria, we are supposed to know the number of states and their capital in Nigeria. There are a total of 36 states and one federal capital territory in Nigeria. It was around 1960 and 1963 when Nigeria was divided into 3 regions. These regions are eastern region, western region and northern region.
If you are familiar with the history of Nigeria, we were made to understand that from 1963 to 1967, the mid-western region was carved out of the old western region.
It was the government of General Yakubu Gowon in 1967 and 1975 that created the first 12 states in Nigeria. These states are Rivers, Cross Rivers, East Central State, Bendel, Western State and Lagos, Benue-Plateau, Kaduna, Kwara, Kano, Northwestern State and North-Eastern State.
