Ready to learn more about the bomboclaat meme? Do read on.

Like other social media, Twitter is famous for its weird memes, idiosyncrasies and hilarious posts. And now Bomboclaat which has been trending for months is still very much used in Tweets.

The word, “Bomboclaat” is said to have taken over the “Sco Pa Tu Manaa” phrase. Just like the “Sco Pa Tu Manaa” phrase, a lot of people are now captioning their photos with the bomboclaat meme without much thought to its history.

It would be important to first recognize the origin of the “Sco Pa Tu Maana” before going up to the Bomboclaat meme phase.

The Sco Pa Tu Manaa is a slang phrase with a lot of meaning. In some cases, it means “what experience does this remind you of” or “what are your thoughts/share your opinions”. In others, it means “I’ll hit you”. This phrase became viral following the use of it in the song “Davi” by the Ghanian Musician’ Patapaa.  Therefore most people who were using the phrase were, in turn, referencing the music or trying to give credence to its numerous meanings.

Therefore at the time, it was used to relate to funny memes just like the bomboclaat meme.

Origin of the Bomboclaat meme on Twitter

Fast forward to the present, the Bomboclaat meme replaced the Sco Pa Tu Manaa after it was used on the 3rd of September on Twiter when @rudebowy_lamz shared two images of Winslow Thelonious Oddfellow from the American animated comedy series CatDog with the caption “Bomboclaat”.

However, you should also be aware that this word “bomboclaat” has been used in hundreds of songs before now, and may have fueled its acceptance on Twitter.

What is the meaning of Bomboclaat on Twitter?

The first thing you should know about the Bomboclaat meme is that it does mean what people feel it means. When used, most people believe that the word Bomboclaat means  “caption this” just like its predecessor. And so, it is usually used in describing a very funny reaction meme.

However, the reality is this:

Dictionary.com states that the Bomboclaat word is a curse word used to express anger or surprise. It is also spelled Bumbaclot, Bumbclaat, or Bumbaclaat.

Surprisingly, the term has been used since 1956, and here goes the full explanation backing it’s 1956 use:

  • Bumba – comes from West African words such as “Fante Bumbo” referring to the vulva but in reality, is transcribed to butt or bum
  • Clot  (claat) means cloth in Jamaican English

Bomboclaat meme meaning

When combined, the word “Bomboclaat” means nothing other than menstrual cloth or disposable pads or the cloth used in wiping the butt (toilet paper).

However, the word according to the Urban Dictionary also has other derogatory meanings”

“In this case, it is a word from da patois language of the da Jamaican people and that originally “Bumba” means “ass”, and “claat” is cloth for asswipes or when it relates to persons “f**king st*pid person like your momma”

This definition was posted by Madd Dogg in 2003 and has received hundreds of upvotes which shows credibility.

Urban Dictionary also states that the said word is also used as an expletive to describe “vaginal herpes” which is definitely not the expression Twitter users are trying to gather.

This is perhaps one of the reasons why some tweeter users also came out to counter the use of the meme. One of such users, @tessellated tweeted, “fam bomboclaat does not mean sco pa tu manaa please stop this immediately” (shown below).

Another twitter user also tweeted that non-Jamaicans should stop using the term “bumboclaat” or “bomboclaat” because it is not a greeting, question or even asking for opinions, it is downright derogatory.

Another twitter user talking about its wrong use on Twitter:

#Bomboclaat :This is a curse word used in Jamaica (west Indies) when surprised, angry etc. You can say it is "equivalent" to F**k.

Yuh nuh see me a study?! Tun down the bomboclaat music!#EnglishTraslation: Can't you see that I'm studying? Turn the f**king music down!

Despite these criticisms, the world Bomboclaat is still being used on Twitter by Individuals who have no true understanding of its meaning. Quite shockingly, major media outlets such as GQ, The Daily Dot, and HuffPost on Twitter also joined the crowd in using the Bomboclaat meme.

How the Bomboclaat meme in a sentence?

When used the bomboclaat meme is usually placed at the top alongside an image. In other cases, it is used as a caption, in replies or its hashtag form #Bomboclaat. Usually, the image is a funny or witty meme.

However, Urban Dictionary has other uses that Twitter users are unaware off. As an expletive, curse or “f*ck word, these are sentences where it is more famously used.

In Patios: Yuh nuh see me a study?! Tun down the bomboclaat music!
English: Can’t you see that I’m studying? Turn the fucking music down!

In Patios: Bomboclaat dawg, yuh hawt!
English: Damn nigga you look good!

The bottom line is that a lot of Jamaicans will not use this meme since it is largely a street word, which means it is more commonly used by uncultured people.
