Established in 1952, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been conducting examinations and awarding certificate that is comparable to those carried out by international authorities. The examination board operates in English-speaking West African countries; Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Ghana.
This examination council have four different categories of examinations they conduct. These categories are National Examinations, International Examinations, Examinations conducted on behalf of other examining bodies, and Examination conducted in collaboration with other examining bodies. The two categories that are of interest to most Nigerians is the National and International Examinations.
The National examination category consists of;
- The Junior Secondary School Certificate for Nigeria and the Gambia.
- Junior and Senior High School Certificate Examinations for Liberia.
- National Primary School and Basic Education Certificate Examinations for Sierra Leone.
- Basic Education Certificate Examinations for Ghana.
- Senior School Certificate Examinations for Ghana.
While under the International examinations category are;
- WASSCE for Private Candidates (First Series) January – February
- WASSCE for (School Candidates) March-May
- WASSCE for Private Candidates (Main GCE) September – October

How to check WAEC results in Nigeria through SMS
- Go to any designated centre and buy the WAEC scratch card. Ensure the card is not scratched at the time of sale.
- Scratch the card yourself and get the PIN.
- Send a message in this format: WAECExamNumberPIN*ExamYear to 32327
- For instance, your examination number is 4548902000 and your scratch card PIN is 123498765432. You’ll send = “WAEC4548902000123498765432*2019″ to 32327. Note: do not leave space in-between. This method is only available to MTN, Airtel and Glo subscribers. You’ll be charged the sum of 30 Naira and the result will be sent to you.
How to check WAEC results in Nigeria through the Internet
- Go to any designated centre and buy the WAEC scratch card. Ensure the card is not scratched at the time of sale.
- Visit the WAEC official website https://www.waecdirect.org/
- By the top left corner is a quick result checker form.
- Enter your 10-digit WAEC Examination Number. This number is usually the 7-digit centre number plus your 3-digit candidate number.
- Choose the year which you sat for the examination you want to check.
- Select the type of examination you sat for (Private Candidate or School Candidate).
- Enter the PIN from the scratch card you bought.
- Enter the serial number from the scratch card.
- Click on ‘submit’ and wait for the result to come up.
How to check WAEC results in Nigeria without scratch card
Most WAEC candidates always ask if there is a way to check their result without having to buy the scratch card. Well, the answer is No. The scratch card is a priority for checking results, no matter which method you use, you need the PIN of a scratch card. Also, don’t forget that you’re only allowed to check your results five times with one scratch card. This means after the fifth time of checking your result with a scratch card, you’ll need to acquire another scratch card to check your results for the sixth time.
In order to save money on buying scratch cards, make sure you print out your result after checking it and make clear photocopies of the result. By doing this, there will be no need of going to the WAEC website or SMS method to check your result every time.
