In a recent interactive meeting with several Nigerian trade associations in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike took the time to speak about the significance of Peter Obi’s candidacy in the 2023 presidential election. The Governor hailed Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, as the hero of the election, attributing his candidacy as a key factor that prevented the North from retaining power after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure comes to an end.
Governor Wike was quick to dispel any rumors about his support for Obi, stating unequivocally that the Labour Party presidential candidate was his personal hero of the election. He explained that contrary to insinuations that he did not support Obi’s candidacy, he recognized the immense impact that Obi’s decision to run for president under the Labour Party had on the election’s outcome.
According to Governor Wike, Obi’s candidacy was instrumental in preventing power from returning to the North and potentially causing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to lose the South-South and South-East regions. He reiterated that without Obi’s candidacy, power would have likely remained in the North, with dire consequences for the regions that PDP lost in the previous election.
Governor Wike commended Obi for his bravery and tenacity, stating that his contribution to the election would not be forgotten regardless of the outcome. He emphasized that history would remember Obi as someone who fought well and made a significant impact, noting that his candidacy had re-energized the political landscape in Nigeria.
The Governor also addressed the issue of the election’s outcome, stating that while Obi may not have been declared the winner, the law would take its course. He expressed confidence that whatever the outcome, Obi’s contribution to the election had set a new standard for political participation in Nigeria.
