On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, an official from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) reported that two Nigerian nationals were arrested at Mumbai airport for attempting to smuggle in cocaine worth nearly Rs 30 crore.
Acting on intelligence inputs, DRI officials intercepted the passengers upon their arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport from Lagos via Addis Ababa on Friday. The officials produced the individuals in court and requested a medical examination as they suspected that the passengers had concealed drugs in their bodies.
The medical examination confirmed that the passengers had ingested capsules containing a substance. The duo purged 167 capsules over three days, which contained a total of 2.97 kg of cocaine worth ₹ 29.76 crore. The two passengers were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and have been remanded in judicial custody.
