The Nigeria Police Force is a law enforcement agency with a total number of 371,800 members. Although, strategic implementation has been put in place to increase the number to 650,000. Furthermore, the Nigeria Police Force(NPF) is currently under the leadership of IGP Adamu Muhammed.
The force was established in 1820, then a 1,200 member armed paramilitary Hausa Constabulary was established in 1879, while the Lagos Police was established in 1896, in Calabar 1894 the Niger Coast Constabulary was established under the name Niger Coast Protectorate, then the northern Royal Niger Company established Royal Niger Company Constabulary in 1888 with their headquarters in Lokoja. Later on, when the Northern and Southern Protectorates were established, the Royal Niger Company Constabulary was converted to the Northern Nigeria Police, while part of the Niger Coast Constabulary was converted to the Southern Nigeria Police.
The Nigeria Police Force used to be associated with the local government areas when it came to carrying out their duties during the colonial era until the 1960s when the country became a republic. Then, the Nigeria Police Force was created as an independent body.
More so, the Nigeria Police Force is majorly concerned with carrying out their conventional functions which include internal security, protecting the prisons in the country, immigration, custom duties, and other military activities. A major responsibility for the Nigeria Police Force is to protect the lives and properties of the citizens. We must say that the Nigeria Police Force has undergone various expansion before it got to what it is today. There are even more plans for the enforcement agency to undergo more expansions.
The expansion began with the announcement in the mid-1960s to increase the number of officers to 200,000. Gradually, by 1983 the number of the NPF was 152,000 with over 1300 stations across the world. Although NPF didn’t make use of weapons, they were only given weapons for specific missions or circumstances. Besides, during the military regime of General Babaginda, members of the Nigeria Police Force were deployed to their state to facilitate the growth of the Nigeria Police Force and promote polices community relations. According to the 1999 constitution, the Nigeria Police Force was designated and given the authority to enforce their duties across the various jurisdictions of the country.
Ranks In The Nigeria Police Force And Their Salary Structure
The Nigeria Police Force is made up of several ranks, namely:
Inspector General
This is the topmost rank in the Nigeria Police Force and it is being occupied by IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu. He is responsible for the affairs of the NPF. From 1964 to date, Nigeria has had a total of 20 Inspector Generals of Police. The appointment of the Inspector General of Police is the solemn responsibility of the President of Nigeria.
Deputy Inspector-General Of Police
This is the second-highest rank in the NPF and the seven departments of the force are headed by the Deputy Inspector General. Also, the police council is responsible for the appointment of the Deputy Inspector General of Police according to section 5 of the Police Act.
Assistant Inspector-General Of Police
This is another powerful rank in the NPF and it is above the position of State Commissioner of Police. More so, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police can stand in place of the Inspector General of Police, when not available and he or she is also in charge of a zone of the police force.
Commissioner Of Police
The Commissioner of Police is in charge of the state command of police officers and the post is always occupied by the appointed person chosen by the Assistant Inspector General of Police with the consent of the Police Service Commission.
Deputy Commissioner Of Police
The Deputy Commissioner of Police is the second in charge of an area or state of police officers. He or she can serve as a replacement for the Commissioner of Police.
Assistant Commissioner Of Police
The Assistant Commissioner of Police is the next rank beneath the Deputy Commissioner of Police and serves as a replacement when the Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police is unavailable.
Chief Superintendent Of Police
This rank is given to an officer in charge of a department of the police command in a state.
Superintendent Of Police
This is a rank that is directly beneath the Chief Superintendent of Police and serves as a good assistance to the Chief Superintendent of Police
Deputy Superintendent Of Police
This is a rank in the police force that it is directly beneath the Superintendent of police and serves as assistance and replacement for the Superintendent of Police
Assistant Superintendent Of Police
This is a rank in the Nigeria police force and it is directly above the Inspector of Police.
Inspector Of Police
This is a rank in the NPF which is directly beneath the Assistant Superintendent of police. The Inspector of Police is also in charge of a team of Sergeants and Constables.
Sergeant Major
This is a rank the Nigeria Police Force and it is above the Sergeant position.
Sergeant
This is a rank in the Nigeria Police Force and it is directly above the Corporal rank. This rank comes with its pay, duties, and responsibilities
Corporal
This is a rank in the Nigeria Police Force and it is directly above the constable. More so, it comes with its pay, duties, and responsibilities.
Constable
This is the last rank in the Nigeria Police Force and it comes with its pay, duties, and responsibilities.
Police Recruit
They are the individuals that just joined the NPF and are still undergoing fresh training in various Police Training schools. Though, they receive monthly pay while they are still in the various training schools.
