But first, there is a need to establish the foundation and understanding of stock exchange.
So what is a stock exchange? According to Wikipedia, “A stock exchange, securities exchange, or bourse is a facility where stockbrokers and traders can buy and sell securities, such as shares of stock and bonds and other financial instruments”.
There are numerous securities traded in the stock exchange, namely: shares of stock of listed companies, derivatives, corporate bonds, indices, and index.
These securities can be traded through a human conversation like in the 70s or through the use of an automated trading system(ATS) that is technologically like it’s being done nowadays.
Just like every other thing on this planet, the stock exchange and market have its role that is significant to note. They include:
- The stock market serves as a means of making profits for its investors and traders in the form of dividends, which allows them to make more capital.
- It serves as a means to generate capital for businesses to expand their reach beyond their current position and at the same time generating more revenue for the company and its investors. To do this, the stock market makes certain shares of the company available to the public so that they can invest in the growth of the company.
- It plays a huge role in enhancing the management of a company by providing well-skilled individuals to manage the company because it now a public corporation, and at the same time gives room for acquisition if the management fails to perform.
- It allows small investors to invest where the big investors are investing.
- It also serves as a means of mobilizing savings. Especially in banks, they tend to invest the money from customer’s savings with the tendency of making profits from the stock market for the benefit of the bank and its customer. Thereby creating a win-win situation for both parties.
Now that a little foundation about stock exchange has been established, now let’s talk about the Nigerian stock exchange.
The Nigerian stock exchange was founded on the 15th of September 1960 but began its operations on August 25th, 1961. It was first called the Lagos stock exchange located in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Nigerian stock exchange began with just 19 securities and four firms, namely: Inlaks, John Holt, C.T Bowling, and ICON(Investment Company of Nigeria) and they conducted their business affairs in the Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN).
As of then, the NSE has just a total volume of 84,500 pounds but rose it to 250,000 pounds in September of the same year.
But in November 2019, the Nigerian Stock Exchange has 161 companies, 8 domestic companies on the premium board, 144 companies on the mainboard, 9 companies on the Alternative securities board, 84 FGN bonds, 21 state bonds, 27 corporate bonds, 1 supranational bond, 53 memorandum listings.
Also, the NSE trade on indices, namely; NSE All-share, NSE Premium, NSE 30, NSE 50, NSE corporate, Governance index, NSE Banking, NSE Consumer Goods.
The name the Lagos Stock Exchange was changed to the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1971 and with many branches all over the cities of the country. More so, the NSE started operating the Automated Trading System on the 27th of April 1999, which makes trading easy and stress-free.
