Nigeria is often referred to as the “Giant of Africa”. The country is filled with an abundance of companies. Most of these brand companies are not even owned by Nigerians.

In 2014, Nigeria became Africa’s largest economy ahead of South Africa. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Nigeria and South Africa are among the powerhouse countries in Africa.

Here, we’ll be looking at the top South African companies in Nigeria.

MTN

There is no better company to start this list with other than MTN. MTN Group is a South African owned company with business interest in mobile telecommunications. According to a recent report, one-third of the company’s revenue comes from Nigeria.

In Nigeria, the company holds a huge 35% market share of mobile telecommunications. MTN entered the Nigerian market in the year 2001. They were the only mobile telecom company in the country at that time.

MultiChoice

MultiChoice is a South African owned company and one of the fastest-growing pay-TV operators in the world. They have two subsidiaries currently in operation in Nigeria; DStv and GOtv.

Both subsidiaries are currently dominating Nigeria’s broadcasting pay-TV market right now. As of 2017, 40% of DStv total subscribers come from Nigeria. There are over 7 million subscribers of both DStv and GOtv in Nigeria.

ShopRite

Next on the list of top South Africa companies in Nigeria is ShopRite. The food retailer company is owned by South Africa. It is currently Africa’s largest food retailer and has business operation in 15 African countries. In August 2017, ShopRite Nigeria turnover hits 3.86 trillion Naira.

Stanbic IBTC Holdings is a member of the South African financial company known as Standard Bank Group. The conglomerate is a big player in the financial sector in Africa. It is Africa’s largest banking group based on earnings and assets. The group operates in 20 African countries.

Pep Store

Pep is a retail company from South Africa. The company’s headquarters are in Cape Town, South Africa. They manufacture a large per cent of their clothing items. Pep is a subsidiary of Pepkor (an investment and holding company). The investment company plans on opening 50 more stores in Nigeria.

Protea Hotels

Protea Hotels is among the top South Africa companies in Nigeria. The hotel and leisure company is headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa. As of December 2018, Protea Hotels is the largest hotel company in the whole of Africa.

Eskom

Eskom is a South African company with an interest in the energy industry. The company accounts for 45% of the electricity generated in the whole of Africa. Eskom is divided into Distribution, Transmission and Generation divisions.

South African Airways

This is the nation’s flag carrier airline. The company operates in 42 destinations in South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. They have offices located in Lagos and Abuja. South African Airways remains one of the largest owned enterprises by their Government.
